Twice-failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, a Democrat, is launching a new book to encourage kids to read, and joining her at the launch is a children’s author who wants to abolish the police and prisons.
Abrams is hosting a book launch event next week and invited followers on Twitter to join her and children’s author Angie Thomas as a moderator for the virtual launch.
‘Join me on Dec. 15 at 7pm ET to celebrate the virtual launch of Stacey’s Remarkable Books – my new story about the power of words,’ Abrams wrote on Twitter.
‘Moderated by [Thomas] in partnership with Brave + Kind Bookshop, you can get your ticket & a copy of the book here,’ Abrams continued, sharing a link for people to purchase her new book.
Thomas has made several public endorsements of far-left, progressive policies, including the defunding of police and the abolition of prisons.
‘Amen,’ Thomas said while responding to a person’s call to abolish prisons.
‘Let me add Ben & Jerry’s to my grocery list,’ she wrote in June 2020 responding to the ice cream company’s call to defund the police they deemed was ‘desparately needed.’
Thomas has also shared her views on defunding police and abolishing prisons in the press, as well, telling the outlet Guernica that she believes ‘in abolishing the prison system.’
‘I’m firmly getting into that,’ Thomas said in August 2020. ‘I see the way the prison system stemmed from slavery, and how it’s this modern version of slavery, so it’s hard for me to say, ‘yeah, lock people up.’’
The children’s author reaffirmed her views on abolishing prisons and defunding the police, saying it and the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbury, and Breonna Taylor played a part in her development of her fantasy series ‘Nic Blake and the Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy.’
‘I remember in 2020, not just with the pandemic, but in light of the death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, there were a lot of discussions about police reform, defunding the police, prison abolition, and these are things that I have my own beliefs on, and I think if you read my books, you got a good idea of how I think,’ Thomas told Publishers Weekly in August of this year.
‘I remember seeing this discussion on Twitter about it and somebody just flat-out said, ‘There is no way we could have a world without police or a world without prisons. You’re living in a fantasy land,’’ Thomas continued. ‘And here I am writing a fantasy book. And I said, wait a second, as somebody who knows these things are possible, who studies Angela Davis and other thinkers, I see the path to it. Why don’t I create a fantasy world where this is reality? So I have this world that’s separate from our own, that reflects these things and a world where Black people are free. They’re free from the bondages of racism, free from inequality. They have pure, true freedom.’
‘I wanted to create this world because I wanted Black kids and Black people to pick this up and see what is possible, and think, ‘Wait a minute, this isn’t a fantasy book, this is achievable. In our weird real world, you mean to tell me there can be a world where a Black kid walks in the store, and nobody’s looking at them wondering if they’re stealing?’ That seems like such a minor thing. But it’s a world we still haven’t created here yet. It’s my own fantasy world in more ways than one.’
Neither Abrams’ Fair Fight Action PAC nor Thomas immediately responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
Progressives have endorsed the radical ideas of defunding the police and abolishing prisons since the protests and riots of 2020 in the wake of Floyd’s murder.
Several new Democrats, including self-described democratic socialists, have endorsed the idea of abolishing prisons.
Among the incoming freshman class are two Democrats who have voiced support for abolishing prisons.
Rep.-elect Summer Lee, D-Pa., a progressive Democrat, is taking over the district of longtime Democratic Rep. Mike Doyle in Washington.
Lee is a Democratic socialist backed by Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., whose political path is mirroring that of far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.
She has openly endorsed several socialist policies — including the redistribution of wealth — as well as controversial progressive policies like abolishing prisons.
Florida gained a young, progressive congressman, as well, in the form of Rep.-elect Maxwell Frost, who endorsed the anti-police and anti-prison group Dream Defenders in 2020.
Frost’s endorsement of Dream Defenders included a call ‘for a prison [and] police free society.’ He also endorsed other far-left groups including the radical environmental group, the Sunrise Movement.
